Parents 'concerned' after NKY teacher accused of looking up private information on students

CINCINNATI (WXIX) — The parents of a 13-year-old Ockerman Middle School student said they were disturbed to learn that a former teacher was accused of seeking private information about their child.

Kevin Niehaus, a former teacher at the school, was charged with a misdemeanor related to seeking private information about a student, a violation of federal law.

The parents, who declined to be named, were told Thursday by the school resource officer that Niehaus was accused of looking up their daughters' information.

“Why my child,” said the parents. “What do we have to worry about? He said he supposedly just looked at her grades, but they had never had a class together. She’s spoken to him maybe three to five times throughout her life.”

The Boone County Sheriff's Office said Niehaus was under investigation for inappropriate relationships between him and students. The criminal complaint said he used the computer system to find a student's locker and combination number and placed a gift for her in it before the first day of school, “without her knowledge of her consent.”

The SRO discovered more than 20 searches of 10 students who were not in his class.

“We don't understand that the appeal was to bring her in to get him to seek her out because there's no connection,” the parent said. “Our minds assume the worst-case scenario. What are this guy’s intentions?”

The Boone County School District said it would not comment on the matter other than to say Niehaus is no longer employed. The Boone County Sheriff's Office said it has completed its investigation.
