YouTube Shorts is undergoing some big changes, including longer videos

YouTube announced some big changes to Shorts today, many of which have been requested for a long time.

The biggest thing is that starting October 15th, YouTubers will be able to upload short films up to 3 minutes long. Previously the duration was limited to 60 seconds, anything longer than that was uploaded as a normal video.

This is also accompanied by a streamlined video experience with some text removed from the screen, which you can see below.

There are also a number of other changes, including the following:

This makes creating easier and more fun

  • See a short film you like? Now you can easily recreate this magic with templates! Access the latest trends, sync your clips with the hottest sounds and add your own unique touches. You can try out templates by tapping “Remix” on a short film that inspires you and selecting “Use this template” to add your own style.

  • Unleash the full power of YouTube in your shorts! In the coming months, you'll be able to access YouTube's vast universe of content directly from your Shorts Camera, making it easier to remix clips from your favorite videos, music videos, and more. You can even access multiple clips on YouTube.

  • A few weeks ago we told you that Veo, Google DeepMind's most powerful video generation model, was coming to YouTube Shorts. Creatives can bring their ideas to life with even more extraordinary video backgrounds and standalone video clips, making your shorts even more dreamy later this year.

Gives you more options to customize your feed

  • We also want to make sure you can customize your YouTube experience based on your preferences. Therefore, we are introducing the “Show less shorts” option. You can select this setting by clicking the three-dot menu at the top right of a Shorts grid in your home feed. Then you will temporarily see fewer shorts in your home feed.
