YouTube Shorts will allow 3-minute videos starting October 15th

YouTube is rolling out a major update to its Shorts platform, allowing creators to upload videos up to 3 minutes long. This change, which will be available starting October 15, 2024, marks a shift in the way users create and consume content on YouTube Shorts, with an initial focus on 60-second videos. The new 3-minute limit is a highly requested feature that gives creators more flexibility to tell stories and connect deeper with their audience.

Previously, YouTube Shorts focused on quick, snappy videos that typically lasted under a minute. These short videos helped YouTube compete with other platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. However, the platform is now evolving to support longer videos and give creators more space to develop their content. This change will not affect previously uploaded videos, and YouTube is working to improve its recommendation system to make it easier for users to discover longer, short-form videos.

In addition to longer video length, YouTube is introducing several new features to make content creation more fun and engaging. An exciting tool is the ability to use templates. This feature allows users to easily remix and recreate trending videos by tapping the “Remix” button on a short film and selecting “Use this template.” This makes it easier for creators to jump on trends and add their personal touch to popular content.

Another update that will be rolled out in the coming months is the integration of more YouTube content into Shorts. YouTubers will soon be able to use clips from various YouTube videos, including music videos, to create their shorts. This feature allows for even more creativity and connection with the broader YouTube universe. Additionally, Google DeepMind's advanced video model, Veo, will also be integrated into Shorts later this year, offering creators more powerful video backgrounds and standalone clips.

For fans and viewers, YouTube is launching a new Shorts Trends page to help users stay up to date with the latest viral content. Additionally, users can preview what people are saying in the comments directly in the Shorts feed, improving engagement with the community.
These updates aim to make YouTube Shorts a more immersive and customizable experience for both creators and viewers, providing new ways to express creativity and interact with the platform.
