Rajon Rondo, who is considering a career in coaching, will join the Bucks in an unspecified role this season

As a player, longtime guard Rajon Rondo was revered for his basketball IQ.

Now it looks like Rondo will put his IQ to good use this season.

According to a report from ESPN's Baxter Holmes on Thursday afternoon, Rondo is joining the Milwaukee Bucks in an unspecified role and is currently serving as a guest coach in training camp.

“You’ll see him a lot,” Bucks coach Doc Rivers told Holmes. “That’s all I’m going to say.”

Rondo last played basketball for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2022. Since then, he has dealt with two legal troubles: a May 22 incident in which he was accused of pointing a gun at a woman (which led to an emergency protective order later overturned), and a January 2024 arrest on drug and weapons charges.

“There are a lot of factors that go into coaching,” Rondo told Holmes. “You just can’t say I’m going to be a coach and then everything works out and that’s what happens. … There are certain things I'm learning. The morning meetings, the number of hours you have “I spend a lot of money watching movies.”

Still, the four-time All-Star appears to be up to the challenge.

“I just think there are certain people who should be coaches,” said Rivers, who coached Rondo to the 2008 NBA title with the Boston Celtics.
