MILWAUKEE — The Mets' season was on the brink of disaster.

Pete Alonso ensured that wouldn't be the case in what could be his final game with the team.

Alonso hit a three-run home run to right field in the ninth inning to give the Mets a 4-2 victory over the Brewers in a must-win NL Wild Card Game 3 on Thursday night at American Family Field.

It was the Mets' first playoff series win since 2015 and helped them secure a date with the Phillies in the NLDS starting Saturday in Philadelphia.

As the Mets pull off an unlikely victory, here is our analysis from Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series:

Jose Butto allows back-to-back home runs as the Brewers take the lead

In an instant, a scoreless game was opened when Carlos Mendoza went to his bullpen and turned to Jose Butto for the third time for two appearances in three days.

In the seventh inning, Butto switched to pinch-hitter Jake Bauers, who hit the ball to right for a solo home run. Then Sal Frelick jumped on a first-pitch fastball and ripped it into the second deck for another home run.

The Brewers took a 2-0 lead and the noise at American Family Field exploded.

Jose Quintana plays a prominent role for the Mets

Everything counts in an elimination game, but Jose Quintana offered coach Carlos Mendoza so much quality that it didn't matter.

The veteran left-hander pitched six scoreless innings, striking out five and working with four hits and a walk to keep the Mets in the game despite not appearing on offense for 6⅓ innings.

Tobias Myers was done after five scoreless innings for the Brewers

Francisco Lindor had the only two hits for the Mets ahead of Brewers starter Tobias Myers, who had five strikeouts and didn't draw a walk. He hit a batter (Jesse Winker) and had a wild pitch.

The Mets left three runners on base against Myers. Trevor Megill is making his sixth appearance after throwing 22 pitches on Wednesday.

Jose Quintana continues to struggle

In the fourth inning, Willy Adames reached Mark Vientos on a slow chopper and then moved to third on a stolen base and a ground ball. Jose Quintana got out of trouble by setting up a chopper to his right and throwing out Sal Frelick.

We've been scoreless for four innings. Quintana threw 55 pitches and left four runners on base.

Jose Quintana shut out the leadoff hitter in consecutive innings

The Brewers threatened Jose Quintana in the first two innings, but the Mets left-hander came through unscathed.

In the first inning, Jackson Chourio led off with a single and advanced to second base on a ground ball to left. Quintana showed up Will Adames. In the second inning, Gary Sanchez hit a leadoff double, but Quintana struck out two straight batters and Joey Ortiz to plate Jose Iglesias.

Francisco Lindor was the first to get into scoring position

Francisco Lindor was aggressive in his opening attack. After laying a hit to right-center field, Lindor made his way to an extra base, reaching it after the ball bounced out of Willy Adams' glove.

The Mets couldn't beat him from there, as Mark Vientos waited at bat three, Brandon Nimmo struck out, and Pete Alonso flied out to center field.
