North Shore teachers hold 'work to rule' rallies in fight for new contracts – Boston 25 News

REVERE, Mass. — North Shore educators will advocate for a new contract.

As of Friday morning, teachers and school staff announced that they would adhere to the so-called “work to rule.”

This means that they only perform the tasks specified in their contracts.

The unions in Revere, Beverly, Gloucester and Marblehead all voted overwhelmingly to participate in this work-to-rule effort.

They will be in front of some schools Friday morning to hold walk-ins and make their stance known.

“Work to Rule” is essentially a protest after the union said collective bargaining had stalled.

They hope this will highlight how much these employees go above and beyond what is asked of them every day.

The unions said they have been in negotiations with their school boards since February and that their contracts have expired a month or more ago.

Educators on the North Shore say they are fighting for smaller class sizes, paid parental leave, longer lunch and break times for the youngest learners and a living wage for all staff.

They will be:

  • Rumney Marsh Academy at 7:00 a.m
  • Beverly Middle School at 8:00 a.m
  • West Parish Elementary School at 8:30 a.m

Marblehead schools will be closed Friday for Rosh Hashanah.

They plan to continue their work-to-rule campaign on Monday.
