LeBron James apparently won't make things easy for his son as the Los Angeles Lakers prepare for the 2024-25 season.

Lakers star Anthony Davis shared a pretty intense story between James and his son Bronny during a recent practice.

“It's awesome to be able to be here and see it in practice,” Davis said, according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin. “Bronny hit a 3 over himself today. Everyone spoke clearly in Bronny's favor. Then Bron came along and just bullied someone. I just left it out.” [the defender] – I forgot who it was – and got a layup. Bronny came down and hit another 3, I think over Austin [Reaves]. And Bron wanted the ball.

“So you could see that the competition was there, even if they weren't competing against each other. And that’s what we like to see.”

The 39-year-old James is entering his 22nd year in the NBA. He has already defied the laws of aging and performed at a level no one his age has ever achieved. His latest challenge is to outdo his son, who is 20 years younger, in training in the weeks leading up to the season.

Bronny spent one season at USC and was the No. 55 overall pick in the Lakers' 2024 NBA Draft. Although he doesn't have as much hype as the attention his father received more than 20 years ago, he has a chance to turn heads in his first year.

He established himself as a valuable defender in college and then at the NBA Draft Combine and Summer League, and new head coach JJ Redick is already noticing his talent for making quick plays.

“I walked up to Bronny before practice and was like, 'Dude, you ran six miles,'” Redick said, according to McMenamin.

The father-son competition could be perfect for James and Bronny as the two go through very different stages in their careers. James wants to prove he can still compete with younger players, while Bronny wants to establish himself as more than just the son of a legendary player.

In a few weeks, James and Bronny will no longer compete against each other in training, but will instead play together in games. The Lakers begin their season on October 22nd with a game that could be historic. Should both James and Bronny suit up for the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, it would be the first time a father and son play for the same team at the same time.
