Nesby charged with first-degree murder in the death of an SIU student

MURPHYSBORO — A Louisville, Kentucky, man has been charged in the August 2021 death of SIU student Keeshanna Jackson.

Jackson County Prosecutor Joseph Cervantez announced Thursday that 22-year-old Keavonte T. Nesby was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in Jackson's death on August 22, 2021.

Cervantez presented evidence before a Jackson County grand jury that Carbondale Police received multiple 911 calls on Sunday, August 22, 2021, regarding shots fired outside a large house party at 501 West Cherry Street in Carbondale.

A total of four victims suffered gunshot wounds.

Jackson, a freshman at SIU Carbondale, was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Cervantez praised the efforts of the Carbondale Police Department for their continued commitment to this investigation.

Nesby appeared for an initial hearing before a Jackson County district judge on September 4, 2024.
