National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is scheduled for October 26th

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – People with unused or outdated medications will have the opportunity to safely dispose of them later this month during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day at two fire stations in Shawnee County, officials announced.

Medications can be dropped off at the Mission Township Fire Department, 3101 SW Urish Road, and the Soldier Township Fire Department, 600 NW 46th, on Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Law Enforcement Center is not a drop-off location during this event.

Organizers asked people not to bring medications to the Topeka Police Department or the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office this Saturday.

A Facebook post from the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office said, “Unused or expired prescription medications pose a public safety concern and lead to accidental poisonings, overdoses and abuse.”

Participants can dispose of medications in their original container or remove them from the container and dispose of them directly into the disposal box, officials said.

When an original container is submitted, individuals are asked to remove all identifying information from the prescription label.

Tablets, capsules and all other solid dosage forms are collected. Intravenous solutions, injections and syringes are not accepted.

After the drugs are collected, they are handed over to the drug enforcement agency for disposal.

This service is free and anonymous, officials said.
