Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is expected to name former Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell as the new chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Leading up to the press conference, there were several news reports and speculation that she would announce the appointment.

In early September, Bass told the Los Angeles Times that she planned to make a hiring decision by the end of the month, and about two weeks later her office released a 15-page report on the selection process.

The report included input from civil rights activists, business owners, faith leaders and public officials, citing concerns about public safety, policing of diverse communities and issues with officer morale as some of the biggest challenges facing the department.

Bass has provided few details to the public about the status of the selection process and who might be appointed. But the LA Times reported in late September that the mayor had three finalists in mind, all of whom have ties to the LAPD.

Interim LAPD Chief Dominic Choi was at the helm since former boss Michel Moore retired earlier this year.
