Mattawa man arrested after orchard shooting | Columbia Basin

MATTAWA – Grant County Sheriff's deputies responded to a shooting in unincorporated Mattawa in the 15000 block of Road 25-Southwest on Wednesday night.

Authorities learned that a woman had arranged to meet a male friend at a nearby orchard. During their meeting, the woman's ex-boyfriend, 34-year-old Juan Castro of Mattawa, unexpectedly showed up. A heated argument ensued between Castro and the woman's boyfriend, during which Castro pulled out a gun and fired several shots while the male friend fled into the orchard for safety. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

After firing the shots, Castro drove away from the scene. Officers were able to contact him by phone and convince him to surrender. He was then taken into custody at his parents' home near Mattawa.

Castro was booked into the Grant County Jail and is being investigated for first-degree assault.
