Saints score on Perry; Could the blockbuster Davante Adams trade be next?

The New Orleans Saints stunned their fan base when they made the decision to waive wide receiver AT Perry on Friday, but many fans' first thoughts once the shock wore off turned to another wideout: Davante Adams. The six-time Pro Bowler has requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders, who began exploring their options this week.

The Saints are reportedly high on Adams' wish list and could use more help at the position given their reliance on young players Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. There really isn't a veteran presence at wide receiver in New Orleans, and Adams could add a lot to the offense given his strong resume and previous experience with Derek Carr.

But while it's fun to speculate that Perry's departure would pave the way for an Adams trade, that feels more like wishful thinking than real thought. It's not like Perry took up a ton of salary cap space, and if anything, the Raiders might have liked to include him in the package of assets they would get back for Adams.

So perhaps don't jump to conclusions from this roster move. Perry could sign with the practice squad after clearing waivers, and the Saints needed to clear a roster spot for running back Kendre Miller in case he comes off injured reserve this week.

Nevertheless, it is a strangely timed squad change. And Adams could pick up his favorite No. 17 jersey when he moves to New Orleans. Stay tuned.
