Scott's shelter due to a gas leak has been lifted and repairs continue

UPDATE, 11 a.m.: Officers from the City of Scott Gas Department were able to secure the broken gas line, thereby raising the existing shelter.

Repair crews are currently on site and are carrying out appropriate repairs. Officials are still asking residents to avoid the 200 block of Anna Street as heavy equipment and emergency vehicles are on scene.

ORIGINAL STORY: SCOTT, La. (KLFY) – A gas leak in Scott has caused two schools and an assisted living facility to be sheltered in place, authorities said.

Scott Middle School, Sts. The Peter & Paul Catholic School and the Acadian Heritage Apartments were all placed in their place. The repairs are expected to take three hours. Everyone is asked to avoid the area.

According to Scott police, the Lafayette Police Hazardous Materials Unit is on scene and monitoring air quality so the shelter in place can be lifted as quickly as possible.

During the work, a private contractor severed a 4-inch gas line that serves the entire city of Scott, authorities said.
