The fatal crash in Oxford County resulted from a high-speed chase

Authorities say a Maine man is dead after the motorcycle he was operating crashed into a tractor-trailer while he was being pursued by an Oxford County Sheriff's Office officer.

The Oxford County Sheriff's Office said the deputy was speeding in pursuit of a Honda Goldwing that was traveling south on Sweden Road in Waterford, part of Route 93, around 10 a.m. Monday.

The pursuit continued onto Waterford Road, which is in the town of Sweden. Near the intersection of Waterford Road and Haskell Hill Road, the motorcycle crossed the centerline of the roadway and struck a tractor-trailer traveling northbound head-on.

Authorities said the deputy and witnesses performed CPR and administered first aid to the motorcyclist, but he died at the scene.

Thomas Welch, 42, of Porter, was identified as the motorcyclist who died in the crash.

The sheriff's office said the semi-truck that was hauling wastewater from the Fryeburg Fair was disabled by the accident. Officials said the driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and there were no environmental concerns because the trailer carrying wastewater remained intact after the accident.

This update from the Oxford County Sheriff's Office came Friday. The agency alerted the public to the incident late Monday morning. At that time, officers reported a serious accident at the intersection of Waterford and Haskell Hill roads in Sweden.

According to the Oxford County Sheriff's Office, multiple agencies are involved in the ongoing investigation into the fatal crash.
