Teenage driver arrested after striking and killing woman in Charlottesville

A Louisa County teenager is in custody after Charlottesville police say he struck and killed a woman crossing the street at an intersection in the city's Ridge Street neighborhood Thursday evening.

Mamawa Simai, a 64-year-old Charlottesville resident, was on her way to work and was crossing the crosswalk at South First Street and Elliot Avenue near Ix Art Park when 19-year-old Matthew Christian Kozub of Louisa County hit her hit. according to police.

Simai was transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where she died from her injuries, police said.

Kozub was arrested at the scene on an unrelated warrant out of Louisa County. He was booked into the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, where he remains in custody.

The first officers were dispatched to the intersection around 7:25 p.m. Thursday and immediately saw Simai being taken to the hospital. They said Kozub reported the accident to law enforcement and remained at the scene the entire time. According to police, a witness also remained at the scene.

Both Kozub and the witness gave statements to officers before Kozub was taken into custody on the unrelated charge.

No charges have been released in connection with the fatal crash.

The case is being investigated by the Charlottesville Traffic Unit.

“Members of the traffic unit will present the facts of this case to the Commonwealth Attorney before a decision is made on possible charges,” the police department said in a statement released Friday.
