Ex-boyfriend charged with ax murder of Milford woman gets offer – NBC Connecticut

This December marks the second anniversary of the death of 40-year-old Julie Minogue.

“She was here in spirit, I can tell you that,” said Minogue’s father Gerald Minogue.

According to police, Minogue was killed in her Milford home in December 2022 while her three-year-old and 17-year-old children were inside. Authorities believe her ex-boyfriend, Ewen Dewitt, used an ax as a weapon.

On Friday morning, the state offered Dewitt a deal.

“This offer calls for a 45-year sentence for murder and risk of injury,” a prosecutor said in court.

In 2022, Minogue took out a restraining order against Dewitt, fearing for her life. Minogue's father was in the courtroom today. He said the family would have liked a longer sentence.

“You cannot allocate any number, let alone years, to the life of a loved one. It’s hard to just sit there and say that’s acceptable,” said Gerald Minogue. “Do I know where the state comes from? I do. I can’t say I’m 100% happy with that number, but at this point I have to live with it.”

Minogue left three sons. Their father says she was missed during major milestones in the boys' lives.

“Her eldest son just got engaged,” Minogue said. “The baby is now five years old and is doing very well in his new life. But you know, they miss their mother, OK, and they miss their mother.”

The family is now eagerly awaiting the outcome of the court case.

“We want to get the justice my daughter deserves and for her children to be able to see that someone will be held accountable for what happened,” Minogue said.

Dewitt will review the plea offer with his attorney and then decide whether to accept or reject it. He will be back in court on October 25.
