It all started with the shooting that occurred on a crowded bus near the intersection of North 3rd Street and West Allegheny Avenue in North Philadelphia around 6:16 p.m. on Oct. 4, police said.

“It's shocking,” said Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace. “Detectives have a lot of work to do. There will be a number of entities working together to find out exactly what happened here and bring those responsible to justice.”

Filming on the SEPTA bus

Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace told NBC10 that the shooting occurred on a crowded SEPTA bus traveling down Allegheny Avenue.

A 17-year-old boy was shot on the bus, police said. He was taken by private vehicle to a nearby hospital where he was in extremely critical condition.

The driver of the SEPTA bus was unsure whether the shooting occurred on the bus or outside the bus, Pace said. They drove a few blocks further and notified the SEPTA control center, which passed the information on to the police.

Officers were nearby and were able to respond quickly, Pace said. It turned out that the shooting actually happened on the bus and there were about 30 people on board at the time.

A spent bullet casing and a projectile were found on the bus, Pace said. The bus was found to have bullet holes. However, it is unclear whether these were exit holes or whether shots were fired at the bus.

The shooting disabled the bus, Pace had said. SEPTA engineers are working to get the bus running again so officials can restore the video.

SkyForce10 was over the area where the shooting occurred shortly after the incident. At least two police cars could be seen.

Pace said a gun was recovered in the area of 4th Street and Allegheny Avenue. He also said there were four spent bullet casings in the same location.

Shooting leads to police chase in stolen car

According to Pace, the shooter or shooters fled the SEPTA bus and got into a stolen silver Hyndai.

Officers saw a silver Hyundai matching the description of the stolen car traveling at a high rate of speed and began pursuing it, Pace said.

According to Pace, the Philadelphia Police Department's aviation unit was in the air and was able to assist officers on the ground as they followed the silver car.

The speeding silver car eventually crashed into a parked car at 5th Street and Greenwood Avenue, Pace told NBC10.

The driver of the Hyundai got out and ran away on foot, but was quickly captured by officers, Pace said.

A second person also fled the car wearing a black puffy coat, Pace said. The second suspect took off his coat and ran across a field to escape. The police are still looking for this person.

SkyForce10 was over the scene outside a corner store, where a silver sedan could be seen on the sidewalk surrounded by several police cars.

Officers could be seen outside their vehicles monitoring the area.

Inspector Pace said investigators are working to review surveillance cameras in the area. Some information discovered so far also comes from witnesses.

Pace said the teenager who was shot is believed to be the intended victim.
