Yonkers man charged with attempted murder as a hate crime in attack on Jewish barber

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — A Yonkers man has been indicted on multiple charges, including attempted murder as a hate crime, in connection with an attack on a Jewish barber at his hair salon on Yonkers Avenue, the Westchester County District Attorney's Office said.

The defendant, Ahmed Al Jabali, 34, was arraigned Friday before New York Supreme Court Justice Larry Schwartz. He is charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder as a hate crime, among other things, for the August 29 attack in which he is said to have stabbed the victim with hairdressing scissors while making anti-Semitic comments.

Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah emphasized the commitment to combating hate-based violence. “My office will continue to work with law enforcement partners to ensure accountability and justice in cases of hate-based violence and to ensure that we do not tolerate acts of hate in any form in our communities,” Rocah said in a statement.

According to the criminal complaint, Al Jabali allegedly attacked the hairdresser, stabbing him in the face, body, arms and hands while shouting: “I want to kill you [expletive] Jude.” The victim managed to call police and was treated for his injuries at a local hospital.

The case is being prosecuted by Nadine Nagler, head of the Major Case Bureau, in collaboration with the Hate Crimes Unit. Al Jabali's next court date is scheduled for October 23.
