The two people were not actively arguing when police officers arrived at the scene, the statement said. Through an investigation, officers learned that the two knew each other and had gotten into an argument over a previous incident.

According to the news release, officers learned that at some point during the argument, 30-year-old Nicholas Goodwin produced a knife and attempted to stab the alleged victim.

“The victim was able to fend off the knife attack and Goodwin grabbed a PVC pipe and punched (the) victim multiple times while making criminal threats,” the release said.

Goodwin was arrested without incident and booked into the Dambach Detention Center on suspicion of attempted murder, a felony. Bail was set at $1 million. He remained in custody as of Friday afternoon, according to online jail records.

The alleged victim was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, which Sonora police did not name in the news release.

Sonora police also did not release the name, age or gender of the alleged victim.
