Will Smith's fart on set of 'Men in Black' led to three-hour occupation and crew evacuation, director reveals

He fired a gun in public.

Director Barry Sonnenfeld claimed Will Smith farted so violently on the set of Men in Black that he had to evacuate the cast and crew for three hours.

Sonnenfield told the gaseous — and most likely exaggerated — anecdote on the latest episode of Kelly Ripa's SiriusXM podcast “Let's Talk Off Camera,” in which the veteran filmmaker was promoting his new book, “Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time.”

Smith and co-star Tommy Lee Jones had to be “hermetically sealed” and confined in a small space to film a scene for the iconic 1997 sci-fi blockbuster, Sonnenfeld recalled, but just before it began, Smith snapped away.

Will Smith forced a Hollywood stage for three hours after farting on the set of Men in Black.

“They have to be put into this device [a car] that transforms into a hypercar, and [they’re] “I’m going to drive headfirst through the Midtown Tunnel,” he said.

“We have to bring a ladder on wheels, like the old days when you boarded planes from the tarmac. We get them up there, put them in the thing, turn it over and be ready to shoot.”

“I hear Will Smith saying, ‘Oh my God, I’m so sorry. Tommy, I'm so sorry. “Baz, get the ladder,” he continued. “And you hear Tommy say, 'That's OK, Will.' Don't worry, Will. Don't worry, Will.'”

Soddenfeld said he ran up the ladder to the device. Jones ran down the stairs to escape the smell. The smell was so overwhelming that the cast and crew “evacuated” the stage for three hours.

“What happened is that Will Smith is a farter. It's just that some people do that, and you really don't want to be in a very small, hermetically sealed room with a Will Smith fart. “You wouldn’t even want to sit next to him at the Disney ranch,” the director joked.

“He's a nice guy, he just farts. Some do, some don’t.”

Smith's bloat made headlines in 2022 when the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” popped one while training with Miami Dolphins players.
