Bluffton man sentenced after fatal crash involving motorcyclist Aug. 6

A Bluffton man will serve a 20-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to driving under the influence resulting in death Sept. 17 in Beaufort County General Sessions Court, the 14th Judicial District Attorney's Office said.

Carlos Mauricos Acosta Galvez, 40, also pleaded guilty during General Sessions to driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. District Court Judge Carmen T. Mullen announced the sentence.

“Both state sentences are to be served concurrently,” said a spokesman for the law firm. “Once Galvez completes his state prison sentence, he faces deportation.”

Galvez was involved in a collision that resulted in the death of motorcyclist Marc Garrity and involved multiple vehicles in Bluffton on August 6, 2023.

Prosecutors said Galvez was driving more than 100 miles per hour and had a blood alcohol level of 0.169, more than twice the legal limit, when he crashed into an SUV that hit Garrity. Galvez also attempted to flee the scene after the collision at the intersection of US 278 and Buckwalter Parkway, but was arrested.
