Sierra High School student on bicycle killed in collision in Covina – San Gabriel Valley Tribune

A 17-year-old Sierra High School student who was riding a bicycle died after being struck by a pickup truck in Covina on Monday morning, Sept. 30, authorities said.

It was not clear whether the teen was on his way to school at 1040 E. Gladstone St. in Azusa. The medical examiner's office identified the cyclist as Alexander Lopez of Covina.

“We were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of one of our high school students,” the Azusa Unified School District said in a statement. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to his family and the entire community at this difficult time.”

The district provided counseling services to students and staff.

The collision in the 1000 block of Cypress Street, which is near Northview High School, was reported to Covina police at 7:23 a.m

A white pickup truck traveling eastbound in the No. 2 lane struck the bicyclist, Lt. Josh Turner. The rider was thrown from the bike and died at the scene, he added.

The driver was not arrested Monday. The investigation was still ongoing.
