Shoppers have been evacuated from the busy supermarket in Bexleyheath following a boiler room incident

A busy supermarket in Bexleyheath has been evacuated following an incident in the store's boiler room.

Shoppers were evacuated from the Asda supermarket on Broadway just before 5.20pm yesterday (October 4).

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were involved in the incident in the boiler room in the basement.

One person, who wished to remain anonymous, told the News Shopper: “We were just told to leave the store.”

“The parking lot was full of smoke.”

The incident is believed to have been caused by an overflowing diesel generator in the car park.

No injuries were reported and the fire department concluded the incident shortly before 7:20 p.m.

Firefighters from Bexley, Erith, Plumstead and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

We know that the store has now reopened.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters attended an incident in a boiler room in the basement of a supermarket on Broadway in Bexleyheath yesterday.

“The emergency services worked to make the scene of the accident safe.

“The supermarket was safely evacuated and there were no reports of injuries.

“The brigade was called at 5:19 p.m. and the incident was over for the firefighters in 1921.

“Crews from Bexley, Erith, Plumstead and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.”
