Crash in Minnesota kills 2, seriously injures 5 others

Palisade, MN (KROC-AM News) – Two people are dead and five people, including a child and a teenager, are fighting for their lives after a crash in northern Minnesota.

Four vehicles were involved. The State Patrol responded to the fatal accident Friday afternoon around 5:15 p.m.

The fatal accident occurred at the intersection of the highway. 169 and Aitkin County Rd. 3, which is about 45 miles northeast of Brainerd.

A suburban town is pulling a trailer eastbound on County Road. 3 failed to stop at the stop sign upon entering the intersection with the highway. 169. It was then struck by another SUV traveling north on the highway. 169, the state crash report said.

The suburban collision caused the northbound SUV to strike a waiting Jeep and a pickup truck that were facing west and waiting to enter the intersection, according to the State Patrol.

A man and woman from Minnetonka who were traveling in the suburb were pronounced dead at the scene. 61-year-old Elizabeth Jane Baldwin and 92-year-old Marlo Dean Baldwin have been identified.

Roger John Walker, 61, of Minnetonka was driving the SUV. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Six people were in the northbound SUV driven by 44-year-old Lisa Mae Melberg of Zimmerman.

Melberg, 18-year-old Robert John Davidson, 11-year-old Carly Ann Melberg and 14-year-old Haley Rae Melberg, all also from Zimmerman, suffered life-threatening injuries.

The two other northbound SUV occupants, 18-year-old Ally Mae Melberg of Zimmerman and 15-year-old Daisie Mae Melberg of Princeton, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The drivers of the Jeep and pickup truck were not injured. According to the State Patrol, the Minnetonka residents who died in the crash were not wearing seatbelts.

Alcohol was not involved in the fatal accident, the state accident report states.
