Gas leakage at a factory in Chadrasekharpur, watch

Bhubaneswar: A gas leak was reported from a chemical factory in Chandrasekharpur district of the capital on Saturday evening. Until this report was written, the fire department was busy dealing with the accident.

According to reports, a gas leakage accident occurred at a chemical factory in Chandrasekharpur area this evening. After receiving the information, three fire engines were sent to the scene. Police have reportedly closed the Patia-Infocity road for some time to carry out the operation.

Sudhanshu Sarangi, DGP Fire Services, said the situation was under control. According to him, an abandoned chemical factory had a cylinder leaking sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach. Fire service personnel identified it and the bottle was taken to a remote location to be neutralized.

Firefighters used an oxygen breathing mask to search the area and locate the cylinder. As a precautionary measure, a neutralizing compound – limestone mixed with water – was sprayed. The gas detector does not worry about human lives as the air standard remains within the normal and safe range, Sarangi added.
