Gang rape: 16-year-old girl gang-raped in Vadodara: Shocking incident occurs in public | Vadodara News

Vadodara: A 16 year old girl was allegedly raped several times in the presence of her male friend in the new development area Bhayli area late Friday evening. Around midnight, five people on two bicycles spotted the girl and her friend sitting on the side of the road, taking advantage of the poor lighting on the street. They started making lewd comments and mocking the duo. When the girl's friend objected to her profanity, an argument broke out.
“Three of them got down from the two-wheelers and one of them held the boy while two others held the girl. Seeing this, two of the group sped off on one of the two-wheelers. Thereafter, one of the three held the boy while two others took turns raping her at the same spot,” Vadodara District Police Superintendent (SP) Rohan Anand told reporters. The trio fled the scene around 12:30 p.m.
Although the area is developing rapidly, there are very few street lights and traffic is sparse despite the Navratri celebrations. The girl then went home and told her parents about the ordeal. They initially approached the city police, but it turned out that the crime scene fell under the jurisdiction of the Vadodara Taluka police station of the rural police, which began investigations.
Anand said that the girl and boy could not see the accused properly due to the darkness. After the crime scene was identified, the area was cordoned off and a forensic team and police began collecting evidence on Saturday morning. Some of the girl's jewelry and equipment that presumably belonged to the defendant were found on site. The girl had gone with the boy from Laxmipura area and told her family that she wanted to talk to him.
Sketchy description A challenge
Investigators face a difficult task in identifying the suspected rapists and have spoken extensively with the girl and boy so they can tell what they remember. Police said details revealed so far indicate the defendants were adults, some of whom could be between 30 and 35 years old. They spoke both Gujarati and Hindi.
No surveillance cameras nearby
While there are no street lights in the area under the jurisdiction of Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), there are no CCTVs either. The police are checking all possible escape routes from the crime scene. The Vadodara city police team has also joined the investigation and is trying to collect footage from the CCTVs in the adjoining areas.
No Garba connection
Although the crime was committed on Navratri night, police insisted that it had no connection with Garbas in the city. District Police Commissioner Rohan Anand said the girl had neither taken part in a Garba event nor was she wearing a traditional outfit.
