Marquette police officer injured, defendant pleads not guilty

A Milwaukee man accused of injuring several police officers as they tried to arrest him in February pleaded not guilty this week.

Prosecutors said 34-year-old Travis Jordan also tried to flee in the middle of the booking process after his initial arrest. He was later fully released from custody and court records show he was arrested again in September, weeks after an arrest warrant was issued.

According to a criminal complaint, Marquette University police officers interviewed Jordan around 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 2 at the Wisconsin Probation and Parole Office – near 6th and Wells. He tried to push past them and run when they told him he should be arrested for obstructing an officer.

Prosecutors said several officers were “on the scene fighting to gain control of Jordan” and one officer verbally abused Jordan twice. As officers tried to handcuff Jordan, the complaint says he headbutted and kicked one officer, kicked and dragged another and punched a third officer in the face.

Officers took Jordan to the MUPD booking room later that day after he was arrested for obstructing an armed robbery investigation. The complaint says he was given a “smoke break” and ran away handcuffed and tied up.

Prosecutors said Jordan ran through a parking garage. He was taken back into custody within minutes after a fight in which another officer was injured.

Overall, Jordan is charged with assault on a police officer (two counts), escape from custody, aggravated obstruction of an officer and misdemeanor obstruction of an officer. His cash bond was set at $2,500 on Sept. 4.
