James Dempsey is charged with the murder of Bärbel Gansau in 1978

The crime scene was gruesome and macabre at the same time.

The German woman, whose body was found mutilated and partially decomposed on her bed, had suffered 37 stab wounds, one of them a fatal blow to the chest. There were fondue forks scattered across the bed, none of them the murder weapon. In fact, none of the forks were used at all in the malicious attack; Apparently the killer just randomly threw her on the bed before leaving.

35-year-old Bärbel Gansau was killed in the murder in Ludwigsburg in June 1978. Now, 46 years later, a Central New York man, then an Army soldier in Germany, is accused of murder and faces extradition.
