Man charged over hit-and-run accident in Avon involving a cyclist

AVON, CT – Local police have charged an Avon motorist in connection with a hit-and-run accident between a motor vehicle and a juvenile on a bicycle Friday night.

According to Avon police, Alex Joel Rivera was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment; Evading responsibility for serious bodily harm; driving a motor vehicle without a license; and two counts of risk of injury to a child.

Police did not release Rivera's age or hometown, and his court status was also not available.

According to the APD, at approximately 9:16 p.m., officers were called to Arch Road near Security Drive to investigate a report of debris on the road

“When officers arrived, it was determined that a bicyclist had been struck by a vehicle that had avoided the scene of the accident,” the APD wrote. “The cyclist could not be found at this time. The roadway was temporarily closed to preserve the scene of the accident.”

Shortly thereafter, police received a call about a pedestrian struck by a vehicle near 73rd Street

However, police ultimately learned that the person was the cyclist involved in the Arch Road incident.

“With important information from witnesses and the efforts of the police
“Officers were on scene and the vehicle was identified and located,” police wrote.

This led to Rivera being taken into custody.

The teenage cyclist was treated at Hartford Hospital, but police did not provide any information about the cyclist's condition.

Police said the North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident.
