Merrimack man arrested on multiple charges after high-speed chase

MERRIMACK – A local man with a history of traffic offenses was arrested on outstanding warrants after leading police on two high-speed chases, Merrimack police reported.

Matthew Caruso, 28, was taken into custody without incident on October 5 at the Extended Stay America Hotel.

Officers were executing a warrant stemming from two separate incidents in late September and early October in which Caruso allegedly fled from police at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

The first pursuit occurred on September 23 when officers attempted a traffic stop.

Caruso, identified by the pursuing officer, disobeyed and sped away.

A records review revealed Caruso is a habitual offender.

On October 3, the same officer spotted Caruso driving the vehicle with mismatched license plates.

Caruso again evaded police at high speed.

Because he was known to be staying at a local hotel, authorities decided to postpone the arrest to ensure public safety.

Caruso faces two Class B felony charges for being a habitual offender, two Class A misdemeanor charges for disobeying a police officer and one Class A misdemeanor charge for reckless operation and misuse of license plates.

He also has outstanding warrants in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

After refusing bail, Caruso is being held at the Hillsborough County Correctional Facility.

His court date is scheduled for Oct. 7 in Merrimack 9th District Court.
