Latest Apple leak details on iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro design changes

As Apple continues to address issues with recently released iPhones, details about the upcoming iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro suggest that a key trend seen in the iPhone 16 family is expanding.

Last year the Action Button was added to the Pro models. This programmable button allowed users to select from a list of Apple-approved functions that the button would activate. With the introduction of the iPhone 16 family, the Action Button was available on all four models (iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max). What's more, Apple's designers liked the idea so much that they added a second button.

The Capture Button uses capacitive technology to provide multiple control options with sliders, taps, and holds, all tailored to specific functions. Future updates will add more features. It's fair to say that the community has embraced these buttons.

And Apple doesn't stop at two. The 2025 iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro could have a new button.

As Maijin Bu reports, Apple is currently testing a new design that replaces the action button and volume buttons with a single new button. The ability to move and change volume and trigger certain software options are obvious features, although I wouldn't be surprised if more options were available. Maybe there is space for the awkwardly stored Apple Intelligence in addition to volume and performance? Or does this design free up the side button and become a dedicated Apple Intelligence button as its current functions are carried over?

The early designs of the iPhone 16 family, reported in Q4 2023, featured multiple iterations of the action and camera buttons, as Apple was believed to be trying out different options in builds and prototypes. The same goes for any design change, including adding a new button. While the final form factor may not be finalized yet, the intent is clear.

Apple has found a special way to sell you a button and isn't afraid to use it.
