Las Cruces teen arrested on human smuggling charges after chase ended in crash

An 18-year-old was arrested and charged with smuggling after a chase ended in a crash Friday night in west El Paso.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Mesa Street and Doniphan around 5 p.m. Friday.

A police officer attempted to stop a silver GMC Yukon suspected of human smuggling.

A DPS trooper attempted to stop the Yukon for a traffic violation near Doniphan and N. Mesa Streets.

The Yukon immediately fled from the soldier's lights and siren.

At the intersection of N. Mesa Street and S. Desert Blvd, the Yukon crashed into five vehicles that were stopped at the light.

Eight occupants of the five cars involved suffered minor injuries; Only one person was taken to Providence Hospital, the rest refused transport.

There were also four migrants in Yukon, two women, a man and a six-year-old boy.

All four were turned over to the US Border Patrol.

The driver of the Yukon was identified as 18-year-old Andre Maurice W. Marrujo of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Agents took Marrujo into custody and booked him into the El Paso County Jail on charges of human smuggling and evading arrest with a motor vehicle.
