Newberry County Police presence on Summer Street

Police Chief Kevin Goodman said officers were searching for a domestic violence suspect from a previous incident and found him in the 1100 block of Summer Street.

NEWBERRY, S.C. – A neighborhood has reopened after a suspect in a previous domestic violence incident was arrested without incident following an hours-long incident in Newberry on Saturday.

Police Chief Kevin Goodman said officers were searching for a domestic violence suspect from a previous incident and found him Saturday morning in the 1100 block of Summer Street. However, Goodman said the suspect ran in and barricaded himself before a warrant could be served on him.

He said Newberry police officers and Newberry County officials then began blocking nearby roads and evacuating surrounding homes as a precaution. During the incident, the Newberry Police Department negotiator was assisted by teams from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and their negotiator.

Goodman said the incident ended shortly after 4 p.m. when negotiators managed to get the man to come out and surrender. Officials said the suspect was under investigation and additional charges may be pending.

Goodman said there was no danger to the immediate community at any time as law enforcement worked quickly to cordon off the area.

Goodman thanked his negotiator, the SLED negotiator, the SWAT team, and officers and deputies who worked quickly to secure the scene for SLED.
