Vigil remembers Richmond's mother killed in murder-suicide

RICHMOND, Va. – Family and friends gathered at Rocketts Landing to remember a Richmond mother killed in a murder-suicide.

With purple and white balloons in hand, dozens came by to pay their respects to Jonell Brown. According to police, the mother of three was killed three weeks ago in an apartment on Chamberlayne Avenue.

“We did a purple and white that fits the theme of domestic violence,” said Shawn Cosby, who has a daughter with Brown. “We really want this to be known in the community because we don't want this to happen to someone else's mother, sister, daughter or parent that they look up to.”

Cosby previously said her 10-year-old little girl was in the apartment when an argument turned into domestic violence, according to police.

Crime Insider sources told Jon Burkett that a man shot Jonell and then took his own life.

Cosby said his daughter was able to get her siblings and a friend to safety.

“I'm proud of her for reacting so quickly and getting her siblings and her best friend out of there,” Cosby said. “She is very strong and mature.”

“Ladies or gentlemen: We on both sides of the field are experiencing domestic violence,” Cosby pleaded. “If you are going through this, please get help. Please find someone to help you. Even if your mental state isn't quite right. There is someone who can help. It doesn’t have to go that far.”
