With the Galaxy S25 Ultra set to launch early next year, now is the perfect time to compare it to the current flagship. And while the Galaxy S24 Ultra tops our ranking of the best Samsung phones, the question is whether the Galaxy S25 Ultra offers enough new upgrades to make people consider spending more money to upgrade to a new phone .

While it's still too early in the rumor cycle to say definitively when the Galaxy S25 Ultra will launch, based on current history we'll see it hit stores sometime in early 2025, likely in January or February.

To put this into perspective, this year's release of the Galaxy S24 was the earliest in the flagship's history. A Galaxy Unpacked event took place on January 17th and the S24 models shipped two weeks later on January 31st.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra also saw a price increase over its predecessor, going from $1,199 to $1,299 for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. For the Galaxy S25 Ultra, that price could go even higher, with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claiming that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which is expected to power the upcoming flagship, could drive up the phone's cost. However, nothing more specific has been known so far.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra already has a huge 6.8-inch screen, but the Galaxy S25 Ultra could take that up a notch. Well-known leaker Ice Universe reported back in August that the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra will feature a 6.86-inch display – not a huge difference, but one that puts it on par with its competitor, Apple's iPhone 16 Pro Max .

What's notable about the larger screen is that Samsung has shrunk the flagship's frame, making the phone's overall dimensions smaller despite the larger display. The same leak claimed that the S25 Ultra will be 77.6mm wide, a slight decrease from the 79mm width of the current S24 Ultra. We've also heard reports that Samsung is switching to rounded corners on the S25 Ultra, ditching the square corners that its Ultra phones have had since the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

The curvier design, narrower bezel, and narrower bezel mean the S25 Ultra should be a little easier to hold for longer periods of time than its predecessor.

Topping our list of the best camera phones, the Galaxy S24 Ultra features a 200-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 10-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and a new 50-megapixel telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom.

Early rumors about the Galaxy S25 Ultra's camera suggest that we could be in for some modest upgrades, such as the ultra-wide-angle lens moving from a 12MP to a 50MP sensor on the upcoming flagship. The 200-megapixel main camera, 12-megapixel selfie camera, and 50-megapixel telephoto camera are expected to remain unchanged, although they could receive some improvements under the hood that make for a smoother user experience.

Rumor has it that the S25 Ultra's telephoto lens will have “variable capabilities” that can include fixed focal lengths between 4x and 5x zoom, and then again between 6x and 7x zoom, streamlining the process when shooting video. Another rumor suggests that Samsung may ditch the second telephoto lens altogether and leave the S25 Ultra with three camera lenses instead of four.

Given the use of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the Galaxy S24 Ultra, chances are that the Galaxy S25 Ultra will come with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset. Qualcomm has already confirmed that we will see the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in October, which ties in with an early 2025 release of Samsung's flagship series.

However, the leaked early Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 benchmarks aren't necessarily worth mentioning. According to the leaked Geekbench results, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 achieves the highest score of an A18 Bionic-powered iPhone. In our testing, the iPhone 16 Pro achieved Geekbench single- and multi-core scores of 3,400 and 8,341, respectively, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max came close at 3,386 and 8,306, respectively – while a report of a Galaxy S25 Ultra with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 gave results of 3,069 and 9,080 respectively.

Another credible rumor suggests that the Galaxy S25 Ultra will achieve faster UFS 4.1 speeds, which would boost the phone's performance even further. The RAM capacity could also take a leap, rising from 12 GB on the current Galaxy S24 Ultra to 16 GB on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. This would make it better equipped for multitasking and processing Galaxy AI requests.

Speaking of AI features, there's a good chance the Galaxy S25 Ultra will offer more features once it launches, similar to what we saw with the S24 series, but there's no word yet on what those might be.

When it comes to battery life, the Galaxy S24 Ultra already landed on our list of the best cell phone battery lives with its 5,000 mAh cell that lasted almost 17 hours in our battery tests. According to rumors, the Galaxy S25 Ultra could retain the same 5,000mAh battery and 45W charging speeds.

It's still a little too early to say definitively whether you should consider upgrading to the Galaxy S25 Ultra when it launches. Based on what we know so far, the hardware upgrades over the Galaxy S24 Ultra appear to be minimal, but Samsung could have some fancy new tech or AI-powered features up its sleeve to sweeten the deal.

Given that Apple was the clear frontrunner in our iPhone 16 Pro Max vs. Galaxy S24 Ultra duel, Samsung still has a lot of work to do with its next flagship phones. We should learn more about what to expect with the S25 Ultra as we get closer to launch, but in the meantime it might be worth holding off on upgrading for now.
