An anti-Israel protester reportedly set himself on fire outside the White House, a video of which went viral. The man screamed in pain after setting his left arm on fire in the middle of the street. Bystanders and police rushed to help.

The incident

The man holds his left arm in the air after lighting it on fire. The crowd douses his arm with water and tries to put out the flames with towels.

The man screams while being restrained by DC Metropolitan police officers after the fire is extinguished, claiming he is a journalist, according to another clip. The left sleeve of his burnt shirt is soaked in liquid and pink. Superficial burns are visible on his arm.

A passerby pours his water bottle on the injuries. “We are spreading the misinformation,” shouts the man who tried to immolate himself. “I'm a journalist and I said it's okay.” A woman hugs him.

A white-shirted officer is seen intervening and ordering onlookers to “confirm it.” Some bystanders are pushed out of the way.

The incident occurred in the 800 block of 16th Street, directly in front of the White House, Washington DC Metropolitan Police said. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene. According to police, the man had to be taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The District of Columbia has a long and proud history of peaceful First Amendment activity, and the Metropolitan Police Department manages hundreds of protests, demonstrations and other events each year,” the department said, according to the New York Post. “We will continue to support those who choose to protest peacefully and safely, and we will continue to hold accountable those who commit criminal acts in our city.”

On Saturday evening, October 5, protesters gathered outside the White House, ahead of the first anniversary of the October 7 attack on Israel. They are reportedly calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
