Chris Martin says making music with Michael J. Fox is “so trippy”

Chris Martin is in awe of Michel J. Fox!

When appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon On Thursday, October 3, the Coldplay frontman, 47, discussed with Fox, 63, how “trippy” his performance at the 2024 Glastonbury Festival in England was.

“I think there are certain things for people your age and mine that were so instilled in us that made us dream about this job. And one of them was Micahel Back to the future” Martin told host Jimmy Fallon, referring to Fox's groundbreaking 1985 film.

“It's so strange to me that we get to play with him. “It just feels like you’re seven and in heaven, that’s what it feels like,” he continued. “Of course he’s so inspiring as a person and then he was Marty McFly.”

Fox joined Coldplay for a surprise joint performance during their headlining set at Glastonbury Festival on June 29th. On stage, in a special moment for the fans, the actor played guitar with the band on their two songs “Humankind” and “Fix You”.

Martin shared on the show that he previously performed with Fox at a benefit concert, which was another surreal moment for the singer.

“The first time I played with him was at a charity show and I asked him if he could do the two songs from it Back to the future and he was so sweet,” Martin recalled.

“And in the middle of 'Earth Angel,' when he was doing that to me, he started looking at his hand like it was disappearing,” he said, referencing the iconic scene from the film. “This hand disappears, you know, that’s all.”

At the start of the show, Martin appeared in a hilarious skit as he sat with the audience dressed as a spectator named Nigel in a brown floppy wig, suit and glasses and carrying a keyboard.

In a video posted to Instagram about the funny moment, Fallon asks Nigel to join him on stage and play a few songs on his keyboard, including “Yellow” by Coldplay, “Hello” by Lionel Ritchie and “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift.

“I'm a little nervous,” says Martin, still in disguise.

“Are you a fan of the show?” Have you seen our show?” Fallon asks, to which Martin replies, “No.” The singer continues playing the songs while completely changing the lyrics, making the audience laugh.

Martin's appearance on the show comes after he made another surprise appearance with Ed Sheeran at the 2024 Global Citizen Festival in New York City on September 28.
