10-year-old arrested after driving stolen car past Minneapolis playground

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A 10-year-old boy was arrested after driving a stolen vehicle past a playground full of children in north Minneapolis, authorities said Friday. No injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred Sept. 20 near Nellie Stone Johnson School.

Minneapolis police said the boy, whose name was not released because of his age, was taken into custody Thursday on probable cause second-degree assault and booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center.

According to police, the child has a history of criminal activity, with at least 30 entries in police files dating back to May 2023. He has already been arrested twice for car theft and is suspected in more than 12 cases of car theft, robbery, assault with a dangerous weapon and other crimes.

“No children on the playground were struck by the driver,” police said in a statement.
