YouTube Shorts will allow videos three times longer starting October 15, 2024

YouTube has announced several major upgrades to Shorts, including the ability to upload videos three times longer. If you find the current 60-second limit for YouTube Shorts too restrictive, YouTube is increasing the maximum video duration to 3 minutes effective October 15, 2024.

YouTube Shorts support longer videos of up to 3 minutes

Increasing the length of YouTube Shorts video uploads has been one of the most requested features by YouTubers. According to YouTube head of product Todd Sherman, they've heard from creators that they need more space in short films to tell their story, which is why they're now allowing longer durations of up to 180 seconds.

The change to increase the upload limit to 180 seconds applies to videos uploaded from October 15, 2024. Previous and existing square or larger aspect ratio videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 are not affected.

YouTube added that it is working to improve recommendations for longer shorts in the coming months.

For comparison: Meta allows Facebook and Instagram Reels with a length of up to 90 seconds. Meanwhile, TikTok had increased the duration limit for video uploads from 3 minutes to 10 minutes in 2022.

Further improvements for YouTube Shorts are coming

In addition to allowing 3-minute videos on Shorts, YouTube wants to make short-form video creation easier by allowing users to easily recreate videos using templates. Users can access the latest trending videos and create remixes instantly.

To stay updated with the latest trends in your country, YouTube is also launching a Shorts Trends page on mobile. Users can also preview comments from the Shorts feed without having to click on the comments feed for each video.

If you prefer to watch longer videos in landscape mode, YouTube is also introducing the Show Less Shorts option to customize your video feed experience. The new option will appear in the “three-dot menu” at the top right of each Shorts grid in your home feed.

In case you missed it, YouTube has announced a price increase for its premium subscription service in Malaysia. YouTube Premium Individual costs RM20.90/month (was RM17.90/month) and YouTube Premium Family costs RM41.90/month (was RM33.90/month). YouTube Premium for students now costs RM12.90/month (previously RM10.90/month).
