'It's so bad…': Thousands of Indian students line up for waitressing job in Canada | Watch a viral video

Canada is a popular “study abroad destination” for millions of Indian students who wish to pursue higher education outside India and possibly settle there. But does this lead to better job prospects? While this remains a topic of debate, a recent incident in Brampton where thousands of students were seen waiting in line for waiter positions at a newly opened restaurant has garnered significant attention.

A video showing the students, mostly Indians, waiting in a long queue outside the Tandoori Flame restaurant has gone viral, state reports said. With over 1.9 million views

Indeep Kaur, guest executive manager at Tandoori Flame, said they were expecting 3,000 candidates daily for the interview, which was scheduled to last two days.

“It’s so bad…really hard.”

Agamvir Singh, one of the Indian students waiting in line, expressed pessimism about the availability of jobs in Canada. He said the restaurant “posted the application online” and “informed that an interview would be held.” However, nothing happened, said Agamvir.

“People just come here. I don't think there is room for jobs here. It is really tough,” Agamvir Singh added, Omni News reported.

At the same time, another student, Vashvi, added that the situation in Canada was so bad that “everyone was looking for a job.” “Many of my friends don’t have jobs right now and have been here for two to three years,” Vashvi told Omni News.

An analysis by the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP), a public policy research center, has shown that the number of Indians immigrating to Canada increased from 32,828 to 139,715 during 2013-2023, an increase of 326%.

Netizens stormed the comment section on X with opinions. While many defended the students and claimed that part-time work in a restaurant was common practice for many international students, others described the problem as “alarming”.

“Alarming if that’s true. Canada is facing massive unemployment. “I haven’t seen so many youth lining up for jobs in new restaurants even in India,” one user commented on
