Italian metal titans Lacuna coil announce their 10th studio album, Sleepless kingdomtheir first collection of new songs since 2019 Black animawith their new single “oxygen.” There is a fascinating music video for the new song, which was filmed in Latin American and directed by the director Daniele Tofaniwith singer Cristina Scabbia in the main role.

Cristina Scabbia commented on the track and her experience filming the video:

“'Oxygen' is a powerful exploration of emotional struggles and inner conflict. The lyrics convey the feeling of drowning in a toxic environment, both literally (in the video) and metaphorically, where attempts at redemption, represented by “oxygen,” are somehow futile. This song expresses the feeling of how we struggle to break free from what holds us down when the journey is full of difficulties. It is a raw anthem of vulnerability, resilience and courage to face what seems insurmountable. Having to stay in the water for so many hours while filming the video was cathartic for me. The realization that the pleasant feeling of floating could become dangerous and deadly in an instant if I wasn’t careful fit very well with the theme of the song.”

Inspiration to create Sleepless kingdom came during the meetings for Comalies XX (2022), the acclaimed remake of her breakthrough album of the same name. Writing and recording took place in northern Italy between Milan, the band's hometown, and Como SPVN Studios lay. As with their previous albums, the production was done in-house Marco “Maki” Coti Zelati at the top and the artworks were hand-curated by the talented Italian artist Roberto Toderico.

Two other very special talents enrich the album, namely the guest singers, Lamb of God Randy Blythe on the song “Hosting the Shadow” and New Year Ash Costello to “In the Meantime.”

As a sign of the band's love for the gaming world (which we've seen in previous projects such as their card game “Horns Up” and their collaborations with Zombicidefor which they wrote the track “Never Dawn”), the band created an oracle “game” that can be played with custom-made dice and is only available in the box set version of Sleepless kingdom. The new album includes 11 new tracks; and each is a richly textured soundtrack to a particular time and place. With Sleepless kingdomthis place is dark, cinematic and unmistakably true to the unique qualities that have given Lacuna Coil such an acclaimed entry in the annals of heavy music.

The band shares:

Sleepless kingdom captures through our eyes the chaos of a generation trapped in a digital world that never stops, where social media devours identity and brings us one step closer to becoming soulless zombies every day. We find ourselves in between, having experienced a completely analog world and the modern world, facing evolution and searching for the true meaning of it all. In each song, the journey is marked by an undercurrent of rebellion, a desperate cry to regain oneself in a time that seems to have lost its sense of time and reality.”

It's truly friendship time for Lacuna Coil: after their performances with Ash Costello and Randy Blythe, the band travels to the UK and Ireland with special guests and friends Blind channel from Finland.
