Maryland man arrested for domestic violence and standoff with police in Sweden

SWEDEN (WGME) – A Maryland man was arrested Sunday after an alleged domestic violence attack in Sweden.

The Oxford County Sheriff's Office said they and other officers were called to a home on Black Mountain Road around 1:45 a.m. for a report of an aggravated domestic violence assault.

According to the sheriff's office, the victim, a 64-year-old woman from Sweden, was attacked and suffered a non-life-threatening head injury.

When the officers arrived, the victim was able to get out of the apartment himself. Officials said she was taken to a local hospital to be treated for her injury and was expected to be released later Sunday.

The suspect, identified as James Godfrey Shepherd, age 65, of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, was determined to still be at the residence.

After attempts to contact Shepherd failed, the sheriff's office ordered a perimeter around the home while officers obtained a search warrant.

At approximately 5:10 a.m., officers executed a search warrant and located Shepherd inside the apartment. He was arrested without further incident.

Shepherd is now charged with aggravated domestic violence and causing a standoff with police. He was taken to the Oxford County Jail.
