Seahawks OC Ryan Grubb talks Jason Peters, RG competition

The Seattle Seahawks recently reunited with 42-year-old offensive tackle and 21-year pro Jason Peters and signed him to the practice squad. With Abe Lucas on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and no clear timetable for his return to his spot and George Fant on IR, Peters could end up replacing the struggling Stone Forsythe at right tackle.

The Seahawks also face ongoing questions regarding the right guard position. In the loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 4, head coach Mike Macdonald and the offense made the decision to move Anthony Bradford and Christian Haynes, two players who were in competition with each other. Bradford have been penalized seven times this season, the most in the league. Despite completing fewer reps, the general consensus was that Haynes was superior to his teammates.

Seahawks offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb discussed the addition of Peters and the ongoing struggle on the right side after practice on Thursday.

“Anytime you have a Hall of Fame-caliber player who has done it at this level for many years, you're definitely going to have a lot of seasoned wisdom coming through the room,” Grubb said of Peters. “It was great having him [Peters]. It’s a big help.”

“I thought they both had some really good points,” Grubb said of Bradford and Haynes when asked to rate their performances against the Lions. “I thought there were a few moments where they both played their best football of the year. So I think the competitive spirit helps both of them. I think we still need to brush up on a few things in training, they're still on tape. Christian did a better job of not allowing himself to be overwhelmed.”

The Seahawks will continue to analyze their offensive line in Sunday's Week 5 game against the New York Giants. The Giants have a third-highest total of 15 sacks this season. Pass rushers like Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence could overcome Seattle's struggling offensive line.
