Alachua man arrested for causing rollover accident while impaired

Employee report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ashton Leron Lee, 32, of Alachua, was arrested late Friday evening and charged with DUI, criminal damage to property and resisting an officer without violence after he allegedly crashed into another vehicle from behind while speeding, causing the another vehicle stalled and turned around.

On October 4, at approximately 11:12 p.m., a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to a report of an accident in the 7400 block of NW 13th Street. The other driver said he was traveling north on NW 13th Street when a vehicle came up behind him at a high rate of speed; He said he didn't have time to react before the vehicle hit him from behind. The driver said he estimated he was going about 60 mph and the other vehicle was probably going 80-100 mph. His car lost traction and rolled at least once before coming to rest on the southbound shoulder. None of the drivers were reportedly injured.

The officer reported that Lee's speech was slurred and his breath smelled of alcohol. Lee reportedly said he was driving north from Gainesville and the car in front of him hit the brakes just as he changed lanes. However, he reportedly refused to answer any further questions about the accident.

Lee reportedly said he was “from Gainesville” and when the officer asked where he had been, he allegedly said he was 32 years old and could go wherever he wanted. The officer reported that Lee was “argumentative and uncooperative.”

The officer reported that when Lee read him his Miranda rights, he repeatedly said he didn't understand his rights but couldn't explain what he didn't understand. He finally said he didn't want to answer any questions.

The officer concluded there was probable cause that Lee was impaired and began handcuffing him, but Lee reportedly became “extremely combative” and actively resisted the officers' efforts to restrain him.

After being transported to GPD headquarters, he allegedly refused to provide a breath sample and refused to sign the drunk driving citation.

Lee has no local criminal record and was released on his own recognizance.
