Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton talks halftime speech before Bo Nix vs. Jets

The first half of the Denver Broncos' Week 4 road slope vs. the New York Jets offered some of the most brutal attacking football we've seen in a long time. In a torrential downpour, both teams struggled to find purchase through the air, and the Jets took a 6-0 lead.

Broncos' rookie quarterback Bo Nix suffered greatly from the weather conditions, completing 7 of 15 passes for -7 yards. You read that right; He completed seven passes for -7 yards.

At halftime the worm began to turn for the Broncos in the locker room. No. 1 wide receiver Courtland Sutton walked up to Nix and gave him a little pep talk, and while the rookie signal-caller didn't exactly come out of the gate throwing haymakers in the third quarter, he was noticeably better.

“I just told him, 'Do what you do,'” Sutton said Wednesday. “Bo knows what he's doing, I don't have to go – I've never played quarterback before and definitely haven't played it.” I'm at the NFL level, so I can't tell him too much about how to do his job should.

What Sutton said to Nix obviously hit home. Nix was much more confident as a passer in the second half and it helped that the rain eased.

The rookie orchestrated an 87-yard drive that culminated in Nix's first-ever pass touchdown, which was intercepted by – you guessed it – Sutton, helping the Broncos to a 7-6 lead over Aaron Rodgers and the Jets.

“We just let him know, ‘Hey, we’re going with you. Whenever we get a chance to do a performance, we will try our best to make that performance for you. Just keep going.” “You keep going back there and we'll keep doing our job. We'll work together and we'll find it eventually.” “We did,” Sutton said.

The Broncos emerged victorious, winning “ugly” 10-9. Rodgers himself described the Jets' loss as “Outliers“But ultimately the weather conditions evened the playing field and it was newcomer Nix who found a way to win.

Nix finished his day at the office at MetLife Stadium going 12 of 25 for 60 yards and a touchdown, but the rookie likely learned a lot about himself, his teammates and playing in inclement weather and in front of a hostile crowd.

“I think with weather like this, some call sheets are limited,” Nix said Wednesday. “They can play a little more aggressively and things change. “I felt like we adapted well, especially in the second half. We adapted and found ways to score points when we needed to.”

According to Nix, Sutton appeared to score his first career passing touchdown. Sutton wanted it that way.

“Yeah, well, he insisted,” Nix said of Sutton. “I think that speaks to his character and his ability to be a great teammate.” We all depend on “Dourt” and rely on him. He's a great leader and captain for us and that's just a reflection of who he is. It was a great moment. [I’m] grateful that he was the one who caught it. I’m glad we can get past this and move on to other things.”

Denver's two offensive captains led the way to the road win, allowing the team to return home at 2-2 on the season and earn a division win over Denver in Week 5 Las Vegas Raiders. The Broncos have lost eight straight games to the Raiders – half of them Kansas City Chiefs' former winning streak before Sean Payton ended it last season.

Nix and Sutton will be ready to go in front of the Mile High faithful. Perhaps some of the football lessons Nix learned during his 2-0 East Coast road trip will come into play against the Raiders.

“They’re a good football team,” Nix said of the Raiders. “They fly around and do a lot of different things.” They are very diverse. Good in the back seven, good in the front seven. They can put pressure on the quarterback, they're good at tackling, they're physical. I know it will be an intense game. We have to execute our plan well and know they're going to be there and know they're going to make their plays. We just have to do more than them.”
