Menendez brothers await appeal in murder verdict after new evidence reportedly emerges

A new development in the Menendez brothers' case suggests freedom may be imminent.

Erik and Lyle Menendez are currently serving life sentences without parole for the first-degree murder of their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez in 1989, as stated by diversity. The brothers claimed they murdered their parents out of fear of retaliation from their father when they threatened to expose him for years of alleged sexual, physical and emotional abuse. Prosecutors argued that they did this for financial reasons since her father was an executive at RCA Records at the time of his death. They were convicted in 1996.

Erik Menendez's daughter Talia, who runs an Instagram account with updates on her father's case, shared on her IG Stories that the brothers will receive a decision on their bail application within the next 60 days after it was filed last May.

“As everyone knows, there was new evidence that the abuse had continued for decades without being believed, and that evidence had been excluded from the retrial,” Talia wrote on Instagram, according to screenshots circulating online.

“I pray that the prosecutor/judge not only has compassion for what my father and uncle went through, but also for the fact that all of us in our family want them home,” she added. “Almost 35 years is enough time locked away. They have spent more time incarcerated than alive in the real world. Let that sink in. Release her!”

In a separate story, Talia continued: “I've noticed a lot of DMs are confused about what the prosecutor's decisions might ultimately be. Option 1) Serve out and they would prepare for release. Option 2) Another 3-5 years. Option 3) Go to the parole board immediately. Not a good option. The case becomes political. Option 4) No change. The LWOP ruling stands.”

“I pray they get a 35-year sentence and are released!” she added.

Both brothers married in prison.

Ryan Murphy's latest series, Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik MenendezPublished earlier this month, increased attention to her case.
