The Police Service of Northern Ireland is introducing new drug crime detection kits

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has unveiled new drug detection kits as part of its Road Policing Unit's commitment to working together to ensure safe and efficient roads.

The Roadside kit uses a mouth swab, with a red line appearing if the person has used cannabis or cocaine.

This is an initial 12-month pilot program across Northern Ireland where specially trained officers from road policing and district support teams can use the DrugWipes.

This device is an addition to the existing alcohol tests.

Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones, who is responsible for the Police Service of Northern Ireland's operational support department, said: “Driving under the influence of drink or drugs dramatically increases the risk of a collision.

“Unfortunately, 46 people have died on our roads since January. This number is far too high and we must work together to protect each other.

“With these DrugWipes we can target those who use illegal drugs while driving and ensure they face the full legal hardships for a lack of consideration for the safety of their fellow citizens.

“We are committed to continually improving road safety and vigorously challenging those who recklessly endanger the safety of road users and the general public.

“We all have a responsibility to protect ourselves and other road users.”
