Victim identified in fatal UAW picket line accident in Jackson, suspect behind bars

JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) – Police have released an update on the accident that left one dead and several injured during a UAW picket line in Jackson on Saturday.

According to the Jackson Police Department (JPD), a 2006 Ford pickup truck traveling eastbound on Michigan Avenue lost control and left the roadway on the southbound side west of East Avenue. Police said the truck struck UAW pickets after leaving the road. Witnesses said that before the incident, it appeared as if the truck was hitting another vehicle.

Police said the other driver has been identified.

Investigators believe there is nothing to suggest the crash was intended to hit the pickets. The driver of the truck was a 23-year-old man who was believed to be under the influence of alcohol. Police said the results of a breath test were above the legal limit.

The man was arrested and taken to prison.

An arraignment is expected to take place later on Monday, September 30.

One of the picketers, 24-year-old Seth Webb, died in hospital from his injuries. Meanwhile, two other picketers suffered serious injuries and remain in hospital. According to police, the last two to be hit suffered less serious injuries and were treated in hospital.
