The murder trial of “El Gallito” continues

Testimony continued at the start of the second week in the murder trial of a man accused of killing his uncle.

Salomon Campos Jr. previously pleaded not guilty in connection with the death of his uncle, Harlingen attorney Ernesto “El Gallito” Gonzales.

According to authorities, Gonzales was kidnapped and shot. He was reported missing in June 2017 after seeking a temporary protection order against some of his family members.

Gonzales' body was found buried on the Campos goat farm in 2020, Harlingen police said.

On Monday, jurors heard from five witnesses, including the Harlingen police officer. Christopher Contreras.

Contreras went over the evidence he presented. The evidence included cell phones, a necklace, black tape, a pink iPhone and a handgun.

The defense asked Contreras if the gun was used in Gonzales' disappearance, but Contreras said he didn't know.

Another witness, who runs a training school that trains officers in basic firearms safety, told the jury he taught the suspect how to properly use handcuffs and a belly chain.

Testimony will resume Tuesday morning.
