Bodycam video shows a Spring Branch ISD police officer saving the life of a suffocated baby

HOUSTON – A baby's cries pierced an August night, captured on video. It happened a month ago on Monday evening.

“Not my favorite sound in the world, but at this moment he’s breathing. The baby is crying, he is breathing,” said Spring Branch ISD Police Chief Larry Baimbridge.

The baby's cries were captured on bodycam video after a choking incident occurred outside Cedar Brook Elementary School.

The video shows Spring Branch ISD Police Officer Juan Pedraza relying on his training and instincts to save an approximately nine-month-old boy who was choking on a piece of plastic.

“You know, before the days of body cameras, these things weren't well documented and you heard about them but you didn't see them and now you can see them,” Baimbridge said.

Pedraza is seen working tirelessly for minutes, finally dislodging the plastic from the boy's throat after coming to help.

“You don’t have a chance to take a break. You don't have a chance to answer the phone and say, 'What should I do, the baby is choking.' It's better to know in advance and take immediate action because every single second counts,” Baimbridge said.

Pedraza, who was honored by the district last week for his heroics, recently moved into the night to spend more time with his own little boy.

The change has already saved one life.
